Don’t Hide the Thermostat! PSA Safety Hazard

October 19, 2020by admin

It has been an internet phenomenon to “hide the ugly” as they say – but these delicate sensored units regulate volatile gasses, electricity, oil as well as humidity (and aka mold growth) in the home as well. Not to mention can over or under heat a home with both environmental safety concerns as well as financial.

Thermostats are not just a display device, they have built in sensors to regulate heating, humidity levels and whatever else they are required to do. This is like hiding the CO2 detector – don’t do it.

Thermostats were made to be only enclosed with the “housing” that came with them, and no extra. They need to “breathe” in essence. Do not enclose behind picture frames or shadow boxes or cork boards or chalk boards or book shelves or any of the like.

Covering a thermostat or “hiding” it can cause the furnace to work harder, a potential hazard or the humidity levels to increase, to create a potential environmental issue. There is a reason they are placed where they are at the height they are – to have optimal functioning.

Depending on whether it is summer or winter – it could cause detrimental effects by also under humidifying a room or under heating it. Too low of humidity can impact the structure of the building and not just the inhabitants in it with dry itchy skin, too low of heating can have affect on water pipes and others inhabitants of the space.

For the safety of everyone in the home, as well as pets, the equipment and the home itself (and the neighbours if a gas or propane furnace) please heed to the manufacturer’s advice for your heating and display products.
